Where Repton Park Started

In 1887, the county of Middlesex bought the Claybury Estate from William J. Rous for being considered a great site to build a hospital.

A competition between seven architects was set in place to decide who would design Claybury Hospital. George Thomas Hine, an already accomplished designer, won. Although when finished, the London County Council (LCC) criticised the hospital as “too sumptuous”.

It was designed to allocate 2000 patients and to be self-sufficient, not only to support the operation of the hospital but also as occupational therapy for the people living there. Claybury Hospital included three water towers, a bakery, a boiler room, kitchens and a farm.

Where We Are Today

In 1990, Claybury Hospital was added to the statutory list of buildings of historic or architectural interest. Between 1998 and 2004, it was redeveloped and converted into what is now known as Repton Park.

The regeneration of Claybury was considered a success and was awarded the silver award in the National Green Apple Civic Pride Awards. The development was also awarded a National Homebuilder Design Award in 2003 in the category Best Landscaping of a Development.

Nowadays, Repton Park is made of 413 properties, set within 145 acres of mature parkland. The original hospital buildings red brick in colour and boasting high ceilings are now impressive apartments and mews style houses, featuring 8ft sash windows, large rooms, and grand entrance hallways. The old Chapel was turned into an exclusive Virgin Active spa gym with a large pool.
